How I would go about a Bionicle remake, part 1
>insert point about Bionicle's lore getting too complicated in the later years here<
>insert point about G2's story being lukewarm and not having enough spirit to sink in<
Okay, so here we go! Today, I'm going to take the original Bionicle story, move some things around a bit, and try to streamline it as much as possible without compromising the soul of it.
Let's say we make this a trilogy. The first story would open with glimpses of a crash, Mata Nui's downfall an' all that, and the island being formed. A quite literal retelling of the legend, basically. We then cut to the Toa Mata's canisters in space, years later. Yes, actually in space this time, the idea being that when Mata Nui's giant robot body fell to the planet Aqua Magna, the Toa were ejected from his body and stayed in orbit for a time, instead of just floating in the ocean for a thousand years. The canisters fall to the planet and are summoned to the island by a flash.

Before continuing further, I want to add something to the ending of the first part. One thing that's always struck me as kinda weird is that Metru Nui was populated by 1000 Matoran, we'll say 166 per Metru on average, but we don't really see that many in the first three years. The only Koro that comes close to appearing to have that many Matoran in it is Onu-Koro and the Great Mine in the MNOG. We do also see the stadium in Mask of Light filled with a few hundred Matoran, so, all right, but... I dunno, I like the idea of there not being that  many of them on the island. I think if we reeeeally wanna drive home just how bad things have gotten for the Matoran since those days, they need to be fewer in number. Like, just a few dozen members in each village. The Toa Metru still rescued a decent amount, but it shouldn't be a complete success, so we'll say the rest of the Matoran are still resting in Makuta's spheres underground, in Metru Nui. At the end of the first story, when Metru Nui is brought to the surface, Mata Nui would also use his power to wake up the Matoran and release them, and we'd have a tender scene of Matoran from the surface being reunited with all their old loved ones and we see that, despite Makuta's brainwashing, they still sorta remember each other, and it'd just make that ending even sweeter as the Matoran race prepares to rebuild.

As for where we go from here... look, I have a pretty good idea of how I'd want the first story to go. In fact, if I ever DID make a comic about this, I'd probably stop with Metru Nui being revealed and let that be the end of it, just a sweet, self-contained but fairly open-ended tribute to the Bionicle people like me grew up with. Not much would change. Everything from here on out, though, could change a lot. Nothing I'm about to say is set in stone, it's more of a basic framework for how I could see things working out best. So if there are little things about this premise that bother you, yeah, they'd probably bother me too if I ever got that far, at which point they'd have to change. I'm not saying this to preemptively deflect criticism, I'm just asking people to not assume that their concerns would never cross my mind as well.

OKAY, so moving on to parts 2 and 3. We'll play these up sort of like one super long 2-part story. At the beginning of part 2, the Toa are informed that their mission is to journey to the neighboring worlds, Bara Magna and Bota Magna, to activate the other parts of Mata Nui's old body so the three worlds can be formed together again. They decide to go to Bara Manga first, where most of Mata Nui's body fell and there are signs of civilization, first spotted through Metru Nui's telescopes... or maybe even the Great Telescope itself, I dunno. They build a ship big enough for the Toa and a few Matoran, and set out. On the way, a bolt of energy erupts from the Red Star, nearly destroying the craft, and sending it off course. A piece of it, containing Takua and Jaller, falls and crashes on Bota Manga, while the Toa all land on Bara Magna.

Let's talk about Bara Magna first. In this take on things, like Aqua Magna, it is going to be simplified a bit. Most of the Agori/Glatorian society is pretty much the same, but we won't be focusing on AS many of the characters seen in The Legend Reborn. This time, the Element Lords will have a much bigger presence. Ever since the fall of Mata Nui's body devastated the planet like any meteor would 1000 year ago, some of the Agori, mostly those of the rock tribe, though some from others also, worship the Element Lords as actual Gods, building monuments in their honor, forming cults around them and offering sacrifices just to be graced by their presence. The Element Lords of Water and Jungle help the Rock tribe's crops grow, making them one of the more prosperous tribes, while the more fierce Element Lords stay their hand and refrain from destroying those territories. The rest of the Agori, lead by Raanu and the like, see through the Element Lords' ruse and know they are not Gods, but creations of some other beings. When the Toa fall from the heavens, everything changes. Suddenly, you have some Agori wowed by the Toa's elemental powers, wondering if THEY'RE Gods. The Toa insist they are not. Raanu is wary of them at first, given how utterly alien they are in appearance and how powerful they are, but when they inform Raanu of their mission, he starts to piece things together. He informs them that the "giant body" they seek lies deep within the Rock Tribe's territory. In fact, they've basically made it their home base. When the Element Lords learn about the Toa's presence, they send the Rock Tribe to attack them and the other tribes, saying redemption day has come, or some other religious hype. The Toa repel the attack, displaying their powers as they fight alongside warriors like Ackar, Kiina and Gelu. For their deeds, the Toa are named "Glatorian" by the locals. See, I got this great suggestion the other day that Glatorian should be a term one earns rather than the name of a species that lives alongside the Agori, and I fell in love with this idea immediately. So, characters like Ackar are basically just very, very tall Agori, and even a shorter, Matoran-sized Agori could fight and be named a Glatorian for their bravery. Ackar and Kiina guide the Toa through the wastes, until the Element Lords confront the Toa directly and start a fight.

The Toa would be completely outclassed by the sheer power of the Element Lords in this scuffle. The Element Lords recognize the Toa and take every chance they can to insult them, saying things like "Where do you think your power came from? Your power is derivative of ours! We came first! You're second rate!" The Element Lord of Jungle would fight Lewa, who of course has a completely different element for some reason, and ask him what kind of a stupid power "air" is. The Element Lord of Fire would compare Tahu to himself, saying the Toa is like a short-lived ember spat out of a roaring flame that will go on forever. The Toa get their arses handed to them and lick their wounds afterward.

Anyway, I don't wanna make this journal too long by going into ALL of the details... let's just say the Toa have some soul searching to do, take a more roundabout route that leads them to some other area like the valley of the maze, or Kiina's hideout, where they learn about their origins, their designs being loosely inspired by the Glatorian/Agori but their powers being based on the Element Lords an' all that. Eventually, at the bottom of the maze, they'd meet another strange creature who knows them-

Tren Krom.

Now, Makuta will still be the main villain by the end of the trilogy, but in Part 2, Tren Krom would be a more... immediate antagonistic force. Not appearing THAT threatening at first, he convinces the Toa to free him from the maze after telling them about his past role as a part of Mata Nui's body, driven out by the invading Element Lords and forced into the Skrall's maze when it fell. Once the Element Lords catch wind of his release, they go all out, attempting to destroy him completely. The Toa believe he will help them reform the worlds, so they help him reach the part of Mata Nui he once occupied. It is here that we see his true form, all nasty an' stuff, and learn the truth- that he was cast out of the Great Spirit's body long before Mata Nui's mission even began, and was all too happy to see it return from the sky a thousand years ago. He's been longing ever since to return to his old home. He takes control of the Great Spirit's body and starts animating it. It wouldn't be quite like when Makuta did it in G1, though. It's more like he's piloting a Jeager than actually BEING it. Also, he's piloting it from its stomach, since it doesn't have a head. The Toa and the Element Lords briefly team up against the titan as it threatens to destroy the Skrall's entire region as revenge for his torment. Tahu reaches out to Tren Krom, but the ghoul doesn't listen.

In a shocking twist, as the battle drags on, the Red Star can be seen glowing overhead. Another bolt of red lighting shoots out, arcing inside the Great Spirit's Body, and striking Tren Krom. As the smoke clears, the Toa and the others see a figure attacking Tren Krom. It is Makuta, who's resided aboard the Red Star since his defeat on Aqua Magna. As quickly as he appeared, he leaves, and the dying Tren Krom loses control of the Great Spirit robot, which falls on its stomach, causing massive damage to the surrounding landscape. The Toa walk away from this battle ashamed.

But what about Takua and Jaller? Where've they been this whole time? Well, after landing on Bota Magna, they find themselves on the run from the local giant cyborg dinosaurs and the like we could've expected to see up there, until they run into Gresh. Now, one thing I wanna say about my version of the Agori/Glatorian. Most of them do NOT live to be 100,000 years old. That is a stupidly long life span for mostly organic beings very similar to us humans to have. I can believe a Toa or Matoran could last that long... but not Agori. A few, like Raanu or certain Skrall, maybe, could've been around to witness The Shattering, but most of them are too young to have been present for that, and can only turn to legends or take a fossil's word for it that a wonderful place like Sphereus Magna used to exist. Anyway, the Matoran get to know Gresh, who's spent his whole life on the jungle moon and is amazed when the Matoran say they came from another world, though he does believe them, having seen their spacecraft fall from the sky. They have all sorts of close calls with the other native life forms, and even hear rumors of strange, snake-like aliens prowling the darker parts of the wood (Rahkshi, planted by Makuta), until Gresh guides them to what used to be the home, and laboratory, of a great being. Takua, still having a piece of the great spirit inside him, is able to interface with the machinery there, and gains important data about the reforming of the worlds and how to go about it.

At some point, Gresh also tells them about another object that fell from the sky, a thousand years before, which the Matoran conclude is another piece of Mata Nui's body. The piece is small enough that the Bota Magnans were able to convert it into a temple, and guard an object inside it. It's treated as holy ground, and normally people aren't allowed to enter. When they learn about the Matoran's past, they treat them as "heralds of the Gods" (Great Beings) and let them inside. It is in here that they find, wouldn't ya know it, the Mask of Light... which Takua has no idea what to do with, but feels compelled to take anyway.

Now, sometime before Trem Krom takes control of the robot body on Bara Magna, Takua is able to reach the Toa from HIS chunk of the thing via a built in radio or... something. They lose contact when Tren Krom goes crazy, of course. Maybe the Bota Magnans could have legends about Tren Krom that sort of give him away at the last second? As things get out of hand, and the Bota Magnans can SEE The Great Spirit robot moving on Bara Magna's surface, Takua notices the Red Star moving in that direction, and tries to reach the Toa again through the robot's communicator, just before Makuta zaps himself down to Bara Magna's surface to deal the crushing blow. After the battle, the Matoran find a strange room that looks exactly like a similar place Takua found in Makuta's lair at the beginning of part 2. They soon figure out it's a teleporter Matoran used in the past to travel around the Great Spirit's body quickly, and with the Toa activating one on their end by accident at the same time, the Matoran use it to warp themselves down the Bara Magna, only to see the devastation that's been caused. They extend a hand of friendship to the Bara Magnans, and offer to take them to Bota Magna, and once they get the tech on Aqua Magna working, there too. It's been a rough day, and these people need help.

Inside the Red Star, which seems to be the final piece of Mata Nui needed to bring the worlds together, we see Makuta looking down from space, then turning to face his minions, an army of Rahkshi he's been breeding on the star.

maybe if you do a sequel to the Toa you could use this as basis.
